This is the new Empress Effects ECM-519 compressor, a 500 series FET compressor that really lends itself (amongst other things) to guitar. The layout is familiar to most 1176 style compressors but it includes extra functionality that allows for a wide palette of tone and texture.
With basic compression settings it can be transparent if required but it’s once you start pushing with level and fast attack times that the fun begins. It can be dirty but oh so controlled…..
The high pass filter (120Hz or 220Hz) gives obvious options when using it on bass or drums (the 220Hz filter works a treat on chugging gtrs), and the mix control adds the ability to use parallel compression.
To finish it all off is a switchable transformer that can be switched in, out, or loaded, to give a real warm vintage feel. It makes for a perfect tracking channel to add body or texture to keyboards and drums machines.
AJ and Rudy have busted open the Placid Audio delivery to throw a Copperphone up as a mono drum overhead. We have Doyle from People Are Plastic bringing the boom bap and the boys are loving filtered tone the mic is producing in an effort to reproduce some old dusty grooves.
Unfortunately, Doyle’s chops aren’t up to much so it’s going to be a long night of Beat Dick once he’s gone, to find the Clyde Stubblefield in him.
Copperphone and Copperphone Mini are available through Federal Audio

The Eighteen Xs MkII is a one channel transformer coupled microphone preamplifier, DI, line amplifier and passive Pultec equaliser. It’s an Class A design based upon our hybrid amplifiers.
The equaliser is the Lindell take on the magical classic Pultec design. We have also incorporated our famous ”Mix Knob” from the 17X compressor. This means that you can parallel equalise your line input. This gives you more flexibility and a way of creating new tones….
Up to 65db of gain
Transformer coupled balanced inputs and balanced outputs
High impedance DI input
passive Pultec equaliser. Inductor + hybrid gain make-up amplifier
”Mix Knob” a dry wet, parallel processing knob where you can blend the dry line input signal with the eq’d output
The Seventeen Xs MkII is a one channel transformer coupled compressor/limiter. It’s a FET (field effect transistor) design that incorporate some new and exclusive features such as ”High Pass Sidechain Filter”, ”Mix Knob” mix between dry and wet signal (parallel compression), ”Signal High Pass and Low Pass Filters” that colors the sound nicely.
The 17Xs is our take on the classic ”1176 Sound”. It can be smooth or it can be a rock’n’roll monster when using ratio 100:1 (all in).
